Tsavo West National Park
Tsavo west is more famous of the two Tsavos. It lies to the west of the Nairobi-Mombasa road, Equidistant between Nairobi and Mombasa. It is painted on a sprawling canvas of endless skies , emerald hills, liquid lava flows, palm fringed rivers, teeming wildlife and sparkling oasis.
The lush, hippo-heaving pools of mzima springs. They are fed daily by 250 million litres of water gushing from the lava flows of the Chyulu hills. It provides an oasis of green, an underwater hippo viewing chamber, two nature trails and some unique picnic spots.
One will have a view of lions, the lava that forms Shetani lava flow, the Chaimu crater( those who feel fit can climb to it), the Ngulia and Chyulu hills . Finally, the eerie roaring rocks which are named after the buzz of cicadas and the howl of the wind.
There is also the poacher’s lookout which is a rush-roofed hut high on a hill with views to eternity. Bird watching is also a major activity in the park. There are 3 airstrips in the park. The park is accessible by 2WD vehicle or by air all year round.
