Despite its alarming title, Hell’s gate provides a truly panoramic picnic spot. Thus, it provides the ideal venue for a day trip from Nairobi. It’s cleft deep into the floor of the Rift valley providing bio-diversity. It allows walking or cycling without an official KWS escort.
It has spectacular scenery including the towering cliff, water-gouged gorges, stark rock towers, scrub-clad volcanoes and belching plumes of geothermal steam. Thus, the most atmospheric park in Africa.
One can walk or ride alongside herds of buffalo, zebra, eland, hartebeest, Thomson’s gazelle and giraffe. There are also troops of baboon, cats, few klipspringer antelope.
However, lion, leopard or elusive cheetah, you’d be fortunate to spot them but you might find their trucks in the dry dust of the roads with those of elephants since they also visit the park.
Hell’s Gate National Park is accessible all year round, 2hours’ drive from Nairobi. One can also take a boat ride in the Lake Naivasha and get to see hippos and take a nature safari walk where you also get to see more animals.
